Awards Ceremony & Designer Forum
March 21, 10 a.m. to noon
Like an HGTVshow unfolding before your eyes, Growdown! at the Tucson Botanical Gardens, has gained national recognition as one of the only competitions of its kind.
From Wednesday, March 18 through Saturday, March 21, three local landscape design professionals will go head-to-head in an intense three-day competition. The challenge for these three selected designers is to transform an empty 15‘ x 20‘ plot at TBG into“the best” Tucson pocket garden in only 24 hours. The theme, Small Gardens, Big Ideas, will emphasize creating a small, inviting and usable garden that would thrive under local desert conditions at a home with limited yard space.
This years selected finalists are:
Margaret Joplin RLA
Dara Widner MLA with Beverly Wilson RLA
Each designer is given $1,500 to get their designs started and a 15‘ x 20‘ plot on the grounds of the Tucson Botanical Gardens to construct their designs.
The public is invited to watch the designers and their crews as they race the clock from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 18, 19 and 20, giving them exactly 24 hours over the course of three days to complete their spaces. Each designer will also be required to perform a demonstration to the public on a technique they are using in their designs. The demonstrations will take place at 11 a.m. on each day of the competition (March 18, 19 and 20). The intense three-day challenge will come to a close on Saturday, March 21 with an awards ceremony for the Judge’s and People’s Choice awards and a designer forum from 10 a.m. to noon. Winning designs will receive a feature in Tucson Lifestyle’s Home & Garden Magazine, recognition on the Tucson Botanical Gardens website for a year, bragging rights and the coveted Growdown! trophy.
This event is open to the public and included in Gardens admission.
TWO NEW FEATURES THIS YEAR
Student Design Competition
Students are invited to submit applications following similar guidelines as the professionals. The students will be judged on their design plans and drawings rather than a constructed design. The top submissions will be enlarged and displayed alongside the professional finalists’ designs, given a platform to discuss their design during the designer forum on Saturday March 21st and one design will be selected as the winner of the 1st Annual Student Growdown! Competition.
The People’s Choice Awards.
Each design this year is required to incorporate one or more water harvesting features as well as a garden art piece(s). A People’s Choice Award will be given out for both “The Best” Water Harvesting Feature and Garden Art Piece. The public will get their chance to vote during the wrap-up event on March 21stfrom 9:30am to 10:30am.
The gardens will remain on display at Tucson Botanical Gardens through the end of April, 2015 (possibly longer depending on construction).
