Tracy Ledbetter, detail of Pepsis Wasp aka Tarantula Hawk
An Arizona native, Tracy Ledbetter has been creating since childhood and gives credit to the quality and longevity of her artistic pursuits to an amazing instructor who let her reach but also guided her with respect to compositional boundaries.
The indigenous images shown in this exhibit come from years of exploring the desert; especially on her bicycle, as Tracy has been an avid cyclist for fifteen years. Building on composite references, she brings out the beauty in her subjects through detailed renderings of the flora and fauna of the Sonoran desert. Her technique involves first painting soft watercolors of her subjects – the detail and depth is then implied through a top vellum of stippled ink, reminiscent of the nineteenth century Pointillist artist, Georges Seurat and his fellow neo-Impressionists. Her subtle yet strong compositions beckon you to examine more closely.
You can view these nature illustrations at a free public reception on Friday, Jan. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m.
